The sub-inspector, accused of shooting dead a lawyer on the Allahabad district court premises on Wednesday, was arrested on Friday. The service revolver, allegedly used in the crime, has also been recovered.

This comes on a day when the state government recommended a CBI probe into the killing of lawyer Naib Ahmed and injury to a constable in subsequent clashes.

“The state government has recommended a CBI probe into the killing of lawyer Nabi Ahmad in Allahabad district court premises on March 11 and injuring of a constable, Ajay Nagar, in clashes thereafter,” Inspector General (Public Grievance) Ashok Mutha Jain said.

Meanwhile, DGP A K Jain on Friday announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for Constable Ajay Nagar.

The Public Relations Officer of the Allahabad SSP , Mrityunjay Mishra, confirmed that S-I Shailendra Singh — in-charge of the police outpost Nari Bari at Shankergarh — has been arrested.

Colonelganj Circle Officer Virendra Kumar, said during interrogation, the S-I has claimed that he killed Ahmed in self defence, as he was surrounded by a number of lawyers and there was an attempt to snatch his weapon.

“The service revolver of the S-I was recovered from Nari Bari police post on Thursday. It appears that after the incident, the S-I went to the police post and left his revolver there. The sequence of events leading to this is a matter of investigation. May be, after the incident, the police were busy controlling the situation and in the meantime, Singh may have come to his police post and left later,” he added.

Claiming that the police not only have video footage of the incident, but also eyewitnesses, who would establish that the alleged act was carried out in self-defence, Kumar said: “In the last few months, a few S-Is had been manhandled in the district court premises. Probably, the accused resisted such an act, which led to the incident. All these facts will be presented before the CBI.”

Meanwhile, lawyers continued to protest against the incident. Allahabad High Court Bar Association (AHCBA) president Rakesh Pande said: “We had not sought any meeting with them. As it is, most of our demands have already been met. A CBI inquiry is going to be ordered and The S-I has been arrested.”

On March 11, when Naib Ahmed had an altercation with the S-I , Singh pulled out his revolver and fired at him, the victim’s father had claimed in the First Information Report. Singh fled the spot while Ahmed succumbed to injuries within a few minutes. Both the high court and district court premises later witnessed heavy stone-pelting by lawyers and torching of vehicles.
