Rs 1 crore in old notes goes missing from bank van

Mahanagar Circle Officer Vishal Vikram Singh said the van was carrying new currency from the main branch to distribute to bank branches, in turn collecting old currency notes from them. When the van reached the Mahanagar branch, two bank employees went inside to hand over new currency notes. When they returned to the van, the box containing old notes was gone, he said.

Singh said the van driver and security guard were reportedly near the vehicle when the cash was stolen, adding that police were investigating the matter. Mahanagar SHO Shailendra Kumar Singh said an FIR against unidentified persons has been registered under section 379 (theft) of the IPC. Currency notes of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 ceased to be legal tender on November 8, but are being accepted by banks for deposit till December 30.
