The Rashtriya Lok Dal has termed the proposed Land Acquisition Bill most likely to be tabled during the next Cabinet meeting as “impractical and ineffective”.

RLD MP Jayant Choudhari said that the draft Bill lacked enough provisions to safeguard farmers against any pressure from the government machinery.

“The draft says acquisition could be carried out once 80 per cent of the farmers agree to it. But I want to ask,can farmers stand against the pressure of government machinery?” he said. Jayant is son of RLD chief Ajit Singh.

Some points in the draft like retracting urgency clause were welcome but overall draft of the bill was not in the farmers’ interest,he said, adding that his party is of the view that the government should only act as a facilitator and private parties should deal with farmers directly.

To a question regarding Anna Hazare’s recent anti-corruption movement,Chowdhury accused the UPA government of failing to handle the issue seriously and passing personal comments against the social activist. “The campaign was dealt in arrogant and irresponsible way by the government,” he said. Chowdhury also announced that if voted to power in Uttar Pradesh, his party will probe all land deals during BSP’s five-year rule and will consult farmers in land acquisitions to ensure they get market rate for their land.
