Recruitment scam: court summons DIG

The Allahabad High Court summoned Director General of Police Vikram Singh on Friday to appear in the court in person and explain why the court order to reinstate the services of 23,000 police constables has not been complied with.

The Allahabad High Court summoned Director General of Police Vikram Singh on Friday to appear in the court in person and explain why the court order to reinstate the services of 23,000 police constables has not been complied with.

Singh has been asked to be present in the court on May 20,the next date of hearing. The court also issued notices to Inspector General,DIG (Establishment),Principal Secretary (Home) and other concerned police officers in this connection.

Justice Vikram Nath passed the order while hearing a contempt petition filed by dismissed constable Pawan Kumar Singh and others, whose services were terminated by the state government on grounds of alleged irregularities.

In the petition, the constables had sought punishment for erring officers as despite the High Court order, the state government had failed to reinstate them — amounting to contempt of court.

On December 8,2008,a single judge bench of the High Court had quashed the termination order of the constables. The government filed a special appeal against the order, which was also dismissed and the earlier order upheld.

The state government had annulled the services of around 23,000 constables in the police recruitment scam case after a committee headed by a senior IPS officer reported irregularities in the selection process.
