Reality Check

Serial on child artistes exploited by parents... father in real life begs to differ.

Imagine’s new show is about travails of child artistes who slog it out doing the impossible shifts shooting for television series while the parents bask in the reflected glory and luxuriate in the moolah that rains in millions. Khushali and Jannat, the little girls who play the main roles in the serial Haar Jeet on the channel visited Lucknow on Friday, accompanied by their respective fathers.

“It is all rubbish…do you really believe any mother would starve her daughter to keep her slim and eligible rather for meaty roles in TV shows,” said Zubair Ahmad Rahmani, father of Jannat,a Lucknow native who dabbled with theatre for some time and then migrated to Mumbai where he runs a car dealer business.

“I never pursued acting there…it was my childhood dream to settle in Mumbai,so there I am,” beamed father of the rising serial star who bagged the role after clearing the auditions.

But the other girl Khushali has been more in the groove in that she is part of her choreographer-mother’s troupe and has danced in several shows around India and abroad. “It is only because the role required her mostly to present dance performance,” said businessman Prakash Hirani, father of the Class VII student, trained in Kathak. “We keep saying no to offers for other serials as Khushali wants to finish her education,” he said.

Talking of education, the girls said they had to go for the shoot only after school.

“The story about a small town girl and her city-based sister becoming part of a TV serial is set in Saharanpur, which has been recreated in Kolhapur. When we had to go there for shooting,it happened to be a lean time in school when exam papers were being checked,so luckily I didn’t miss much,” said Khushali.
