Rail official held for taking bribe

The Anti-Corruption Branch of CBI’s Lucknow unit today arrested a Divisional Engineer of Eastern Central Railway while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a contractor in Mughalsarai in Chandauli district.

The Anti-Corruption Branch of CBI’s Lucknow unit today arrested a Divisional Engineer (DE) of Eastern Central Railway (ECR) while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a contractor in Mughalsarai in Chandauli district.

A senior CBI officer told The Indian Express that the arrest was made on the complaint of contractor Narendra Pratap Singh,who had alleged that the Divisional Engineer PN Jha was demanding Rs 25,000 for releasing his pending bill of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Following instructions from the CBI,the contractor struck a deal with Jha to pay Rs 20,000. Today,when Singh was handing over the amount to Jha at the latter’s office,the CBI arrested Jha.

The officer also said that Singh had procured a contract of laying coal tar and making all the railway buildings waterproof in Mughalsarai in 2009. The amount for the work allotted to Singh was Rs 70 lakh. He said the contractor completed the work in 2011,but his bill amount for Rs 2.5 lakh was pending with the railway s since then. Jha had to clear the payment,but he was asking for a commission of 10 per cent of the bill to release it.
