On the first day of his two-day tour to Uttar Pradesh to promote the NSUI membership drive,AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had to face black flags in both Varanasi and Allahabad by students demanding restoration of student union elections in the state.

In Allahabad, protesting students carrying black flags stopped his cavalcade near Bamrauli airport. They managed to reach close to his vehicle before being pushed away by SPG men.

Rahul spent about one-and-a-half hour at Banaras Hindu University and about half-an-hour at Moti Lal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNIT) in Allahabad before he left for Lucknow accompanied by state Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi and AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh.

At both the places, the protesting students raised slogans against Gandhi for his failure to ensure student polls despite his meeting with Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal a few months back.

As these protests became aggressive, especially in Allahabad, sources said that during his address at MNIT,he specifically mentioned that he is in favour of democratically elected student body.

In yet another incident of minor clash between Congress and SP supporters reported outside the MNIT venue, protesters started shouting that Rahul should go back and first ensure student union polls in all the central universities. Later, police had to intervene to control the situation and disperse the agitating students.

Meanwhile,Uttar Pradesh Congress has condemned the security lapse during Rahul’s visit and demanded explanation from the state government for the lapse despite having been informed in advance about the visit.

Congress state spokesperson Subodh Srivastava alleged that in Allahabad,Samajwadi Party supporters not only stopped the cavalcade of Rahul Gandhi but also tried to climb his vehicle. He said,“Uttar Pradesh government blames Central government for not informing about Rahul Gandhi’s visit in advance. This time the detailed schedule of his visit was sent to the state government well in advance and yet state police failed to ensure his proper security.”

He further said “Congress demands explanation from the state government because even Chief Minister Mayawati has given statements in the past saying that state cannot provide proper security to him because his visits are not informed well in advance.”

DIG Allahabad,Ram Kumar, said: “I have handed the probe to SP to identify those involved in the incident.”
