Lucknow residents will get a New Year gift from the civic authorities as the processing plant of the much-awaited solid waste management project in the city is likely to be operational by first week of January.

Construction and Design Services (C&DS) of Jal Nigam and developer firm Jyoti Enviro Tech Private Limited (JETPL) are preparing to start the operation of at least one unit of compost processing plant from January 1.

The Centre had approved the project in 2007 and its sanctioned cost was Rs 42.92 crore. The project was to be completed on 2010,but the deadline was extended many times due to unavailability of land. Finally, the project was started on a 19-hectare land on Mohan Road in February earlier this year. Officials claimed that the entire processing plant would be ready by April next year.

A Jal Nigam official said: “Preparations are in full swing to start operation of the processing plant from January 1,but it could take two to three more days.”
