Shiv Om,the main accused in the brutal assault on a 16-year-old Dalit girl from Fatehpur districts Udrauli village, was arrested on Monday.
He and his two friends had allegedly attacked the girl after she resisted their attempt to rape her on Saturday. One of her ears was chopped off and deep gashes were inflicted on her hands, face and head. The girl is undergoing treatment at Kanpurs Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital and her condition is now stable.
The Superintendent of Police,Fatehpur,Ram Bharosey, said Shiv Om,who was arrested near Deep village, had confessed to attacking the girl, but said he was alone in the crime.
The SP said both Badlu Ram and Hari Shanker belonged to Udrauli village and had been at loggerheads over some issue. Three months ago,Hari Shanker had lodged an FIR against Badlu Ram at the Bindki police station, accusing him of criminal intimidation and threatening. In retaliation,Badlu Ram also lodged an FIR against Hari Shanker on similar charges, said the SP.
The girl,a student of Class XI at Rajkiya Balika Inter College of Saheli, hads gone to the fields with a friend,Chhaya,on Saturday evening.
Soon after,Chayya came running and told Badlu Ram that three men had dragged away his daughter. Badlu Ram and other villages rushed to the field,to find the girl lying in a pool of blood.
I was shocked to find one of her ears chopped off,and the other dangled on one side, said Badlu Ram. There was a deep gash on her skull and injuries on her face and hands.
The villagers rushed her to the Fatehpur District Hospital which,in turn, referred her to the LLR Hospital in Kanpur.
Badlu Ram said a few months ago,he had a dispute with Hari Shanker, but I did not expect he would stoop to this level. The GSVM principal,Anand Swaroop, said: It took us a marathon operation to stitch the wounds in the girls head, face and hand.
The hospital is trying to provide her the best possible medical aid,he said.
