Pipraich votes today

The polling for the by-election to Pipraich Assembly constituency will take place

The polling for the by-election to Pipraich Assembly constituency will take place on Sunday. The by-election on this seat was necessitated following the death of Jamuna Prasad Nishad,ex-minister of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Nishad had died in a road accident in November 2010. His wife Rajmati is among the 13 candidates who are in fray for this seat. Rajmati, who was appointed a member of the state commission for women by the BSP government,is contesting on Samajwadi Party ticket.

The ruling BSP had decided to stay way from the by-elections but sources said that party is silently supporting Independent candidate Jitendra Jaiswal, who was defeated by Rajmati’s husband in the 2007 Assembly election. Jaiswal had joined the BSP during 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress is also supporting Rajmati in this election. Among the 13 candidates, eight are contesting as Independents.

Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha said that all arrangements were made to conduct a peaceful polling. At least 11 video cameras with 100 digital cameras have been provided to keep watch on the election exercise. A total of 55 micro observers have been deployed for the polling day. The counting of votes will take place on May 13.
