Oppn intensifies attack on Maya

“Mayawati should be ashamed. People expected more from a woman chief minister but she doesn’t have a word of sympathy. She tries to shelter the police. The criminals and the police are all hand in glove,” state Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi said.

Congress’ UP in-charge Digvijaya Singh alleged the state government was putting “so much pressure on police that it cannot work”.

“If the whole administration is busy making money,such incidents are bound to happen,” he said.

Terming the Kannuaj incident as “shocking and barbaric”,the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights said it had taken suo motu cognisance of the case and will write to the state authorities seeking a report on the matter.

“It is very shocking and barbaric. It is so outrageous. I think there has to be an end to such violence. All such issues… have already been occurring … and are coming out,” its chairperson Shantha Sinha said.

The Commission,she said,will on Monday send a letter to the police authorities. “We will seek a report on what exactly happened,what action was taken and we will follow the case to its logical conclusion.”

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the victim. “The girl’s family should be helped by the government,” he said.
