The 600-odd employees from the unorganised sector who had assembled at Nanarao Park in Kanpur on Tuesday to convey their problems to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi were left disappointed after the MP from Amethi left the venue without interacting with them.
Rahul addressed the workers for 10 minutes and then left the venue.
Once called the Manchester of East,Kanpur has now transformed to a graveyard for industries. We were excited about meeting Rahul Gandhi but it ended on a disappointing note, said Virendra Dubey, who works in the unorganised sector. We went there to apprise Rahul about the problems being faced by us,but due to shortage of time,we were not permitted to meet him, he added.
Though the workers appreciated the concerns expressed by Gandhi on the condition of the people working in unorganised sectors, they said it was time for the Centre to come up with some solutions.
We expected that he would announce some major efforts by the Union government to revive the lost glory of this industrial city but it did not happen, added Dubey.
A tannery employee,Santosh Shukla, said though the Centre had given relief package worth crores to Bundelkhand region,no effort was being made to revive the closed industries in Kanpur. Gandhi was concerned about UP youths migrating to other states in search of work but he did not provide any solution to stop the large-scale migration, Shukla added.
At least,we should have been given a few minutes to apprise Gandhi about our problems, lamented Shakeel Khan, who works in a private factory.
