Passengers set to board the Delhi-bound trains on Sunday from Jhansi were in for a surprise. Union Minister of State for Rural Development Pradeep Aditya Jain was camping at the station to interact with the labourers who were planning to migrate to Delhi in search of a job.
The minister along with two national monitors of NREGS asked the labourers not to migrate and instead obtain work in their respective villages through NREGS.
The team met the labourers from districts like Mahoba and Jhansi in UP and Tikamgarh in adjoining Madhya Pradesh and asked them the reasons for their migration.
Speaking to The Indian Express from Jhansi,Jain said he had received complaints regarding the poor implementation of the NREGS in the Bundelkhand region, due to which large number of labourers and farmers migrate to cities like Delhi.
The scheme has been designed to stop migration. But I have found that rural folk from UP and MP are not aware of the scheme. Many people still do not have a job card and hence they still prefer going to Delhi rather than staying back, said Jain.
We will be touring all the blocks of Bundelkhand region, combining UP and MP,for the next four days and will hear the woes of the people. We will then submit our report to the Union ministry, said Brigadier Bhatnagar, one of the two national monitors.
We plan to stay in the station all night and try to send people back to their villages with a promise that they will get the job cards, said Jain.
We will be speaking to both the state governments to initiate more task under the NREGS in these regions, added Jain.
