Meerut: BJP councillor gets bail in assault case
In videos that had gone viral, the councillor and police officer were seen purportedly exchanging blows.

Meerut BJP councillor Manish Chaudhary was released on bail late Friday night, almost two weeks after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer and molesting a woman lawyer.
Soon after being released, the councillor said, “I have full faith in the judiciary and will continue the fight to ensure punishment to the police officer (sub-inspector Sukhpal Singh Panwar) and the woman lawyer who sent me to jail based on fabricated charges. I cannot be blamed alone for the incident as they were responsible for the provocation.”
Late night on October 19, the S-I and the lawyer had decided to dine at the councillor’s restaurant on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. In videos that had gone viral, the councillor and police officer were seen purportedly exchanging blows. The argument allegedly escalated after the S-I and lawyer got into an argument with the restaurant staff.
The manager of the councillor’s restaurant ,Sanjeev Dhama lodged an FIR against the two customers on behalf of Chaudhary on October 29. “We are investigating the charges raised by the councillor and will take action only after the woman and the S-I are found guilty,” said Vinay Kumar Azad, in-charge of Kankarkheda police station.
