Mayawati suspends one more MLA

Ruling BSP’s sitting MLA Yogendra Sagar was suspended by Chief Minister Mayawati on disciplinary grounds.

Ruling BSP’s sitting MLA Yogendra Sagar, who represents Badaun’s Bilsi seat (reserved) in the state Assembly, was suspended by Chief Minister Mayawati on disciplinary grounds on Saturday.

The party has already denied him ticket for contesting the 2012 Assembly elections from his present constituency of Bilsi. Sources in the BSP said the MLA was given assurance for party ticket to contest from Bisauli seat in the same Badaun district. “His current constituency Bilsi is now a general category seat following delimitation. He was asked to start preparation to contest from Bisauli seat which is new seat under reserved category following delimitation,” the source added.

A press release, issued by the BSP’s state unit in the name of a party spokesperson, has accused Sagar of not taking interest in solving people’s problems. The release added he was found to be involved in the anti-party activities, besides having controversial character.

Earlier,on May 1,2008,a case under section 366 (kidnapping, abducting and inducing woman to compel her marriage) of IPC was lodged against him. A 24-year-old woman had gone missing and was recovered from Muzaffarnagar district. While the woman initially said she had eloped with a youth, she later said she had made her statement under duress and claimed she had been kidnapped and raped by the MLA and his associates Meenu Sharma and Tejendra Sagar. Allahabad High Court has stayed the proceedings against him. BSP release said the warrant issued against Sagar has been recalled in the Supreme Court order and the case is still pending.

Referring to the same case against Sagar, the BSP release said the chief minister has taken the allegations against MLA seriously. The CM has instructed to initiate legal action against those who are involved in cases of women’ exploitation.

“He was assured that the party would consider him as nominee for Shahjahanpur Parliamentary seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha election in case he is acquitted by the court in the case,” the release mentioned. However,Sagar continued to create confusion among the voters of Bilsi about his candidature. “By doing so,he has violated the party discipline and showed indiscipline,” the release claimed.

When contacted,Sagar expressed surprise at his suspension. “The BSP release has cited a case against me,which is more than two years old. I am falsely implicated in this case,” he claimed. He added the chief minister has been misled in his matter.

He said more than one year ago he was asked to start preparation from Bisauli seat. “Suddenly on September 12,I was informed about the party’s decision to deny me ticket from Bisauli. I accepted the party leadership’s decision in this matter. I even organised a meeting of PWD minister Naseemuddin Siddiqui in my district on September 14. Yet,the party has suspended me,” Sagar said.

Sagar was first elected to the Assembly as BJP nominee in the year 1993. Later,he was BJP candidate against BSP president Mayawati from Bilsi seat in 1996 and lost it. In 2003,he joined BSP.
