Man shot dead inside train in UP

A man was shot dead while his son suffered bullet injuries when they were travelling in Varanasi-bound Chauri-Chaura Express between Belthara and Indara railway stations in Mau district on early Monday.

A man was shot dead while his son suffered bullet injuries when they were travelling in Varanasi-bound Chauri-Chaura Express between Belthara and Indara railway stations in Mau district on early Monday.

Two unidentified youths fired at the father-son duo and made good their escape. The condition of the injured is stated to be stable.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) ADG,AK Jain,said the motive behind the attack is yet to be known. The victims were carrying two-and-a-half kg of gold with them,but the assailants did not make any attempt to rob it.

The police,however,are probing into the racket of illegal gold trade behind the shootout,the ADG said.

Jain said primary investigation has revealed that Ram Singh (50),a native of Mahmoorganj area,Varanasi and a clerk with the Kashi Gomti Sanyukta Gramin Bank in the same district,used to visit Gorakhpur frequently. He used to carry gold to Varanasi while travelling in the Chauri-Chaura train. Singh was always accompanied by one or two persons and this time his son,Yashpal Singh (18),a BHU student,was with him,he added.

Singh’s family told police that he used to bring the gold consignment for a businessman in Varanasi and used to get a handsome amount for the work.

Rivalry over alleged gold trading appears to be the motive behind the shootout. The police teams are probing into the case,Jain said.

The fellow passengers travelling in the AC-III coach told police that the incident took place around 2.15 am when they work up on hearing the gunshots.

They saw that Yashpal had caught one of the assailants and snatched his pistol. At this,another assailant shot at the boy to rescue his assistant.

The bullet hit Yashpal’s shoulder and the assailants escaped.

Ram Singh had suffered two gunshots in his chest which had killed him on the spot.
