As boisterous as it can get,is 850 square feet enough space for a 32-seater bar? “Actually,it is aimed more at serving the guests who are staying at the hotel,so the space should be ample,” chorus the officials of Vivanta by Taj,where the new bar Saqi opened on Friday.

There are over half a dozen boozing hubs—let’s not count in the ‘model shops’—in the city and this one stands out mostly for the ambience enhanced by stylish interiors, hanger display, counter, stools,et al. In keeping with the city’s character, the tone is Sufi/Awadhi/Mughal,complete with hookahs and shayari etched on the walls in Persian script. “We want our guests to sip in the ‘maikhana’ experience with all the international cocktails and mocktails to wash down a variety of snacks,” offers Sales Manager Shabahat Husain. Served out of the coffee shop kitchen are rolls, satays, dimsums and wok-tossed meat and vegetable dishes, besides the savoury nuts to nibble on. “The Luxury Tinis are original martini cocktails prepared exclusively for the bar,” says bartender Manish Singh as he shakes up a conction of lemon grass, red chilli vodka with wild chilli martini. A couplet on the wall reads:

Baab-e-maikhana khul gaya,chale daur e-sharab

Jam gayi rindon ki mehfil, udne laga sab ehtisaab

(The tavern is open, the drinking session is on; Wine lovers gather and all hesitation fades away) On weekends,a DJ would belt out the lounge music. (Open from 5 PM to 12 midnight)
