Military mark

Lt Gen (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah, who became vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University in May,is not the only retired military officer at the varsity. There is Group Captain (retd) Shahrukh Shamshad, who joined as registrar, also in May,and Brigadier (retd) Syed Ahmad Ali,who was appointed pro vice-chancellor last month. With them in command,AMU is witnessing some welcome changes. The non-teaching staff now reach the campus before the scheduled time of 9.30 am and stay till 5 pm. The university has decided that they can meet the authorities only between 3 pm and 4 pm,not any time they like. Similarly, the teachers can meet the authorities only between 4 pm and 5 pm. The

V-C recently asked the employees to avoid consumption of cigarette, gutkha, paan and tobacco on the campus and keep the campus clean and hygienic — something no one bothered much about in the past. Earlier this month, the V-C asked the teachers to declare their assets before October 15. Sources said that in spite of some murmurs of protest,a large number of teachers and non-teaching staff complied. The university administration, however,is still waiting for improvement in discipline among students.

Badaun bursts bubble

MP from Badaun Dharmendra Yadav, who is also Mulayam Singh Yadav’s nephew, was on cloud nine after he delivered a speech in Hindi at the UNO,where he had gone as part of a delegation of MPs. He never missed a chance to point out that other delegates praised him for promoting Hindi at the UN. His supporters in Badaun organised a felicitation programme where speakers hailed his feat. However, district SP president and MLC Banwari Lal Yadav wasn’t very impressed. “We accept that big leaders listened to you at the UNO. We also speak in Hindi, but here the district officials do not listen to us. Our workers are harassed during vehicle checking. Will you do something about this in Badaun?” Banwari Lal reportedly said. One does not know how the MP felt, but Banwari Lal Yadav is close to Mulayam Singh Yadav while his son Ashish Yadav is SP MLA from Shekhupur in Badaun.

Centrestage suri

The function in Chitrakoot where Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav distributed cheques of Kanya Vidya Dhan and unemployment allowance looked more like an event of the Lalit Suri group than of the government. A big banner of the group formed the backdrop on the stage. When the Chief Minister came on stage,he was accompanied by Jyotsana Suri,CMD of the Lalit Suri group. In his address, the CM invited the Lalit Suri group to set up hotels in Chitrakoot in view of its tourism potential. An official press note issued later mentioned Jyotsana Suri’s name among the dignitaries present. When was the last time an industrial group got such prominence in a state government function?

BSP’s Gujarat game

The name of BSP general secretary Satish Chandra Misra does not figure in the list of the party’s star campaigners for the Gujarat Assembly elections. Party leaders find it unusual,as Misra’s name has always featured next to the name of party chief Mayawati in the list of BSP’s campaigners for almost all elections in the past since he emerged as the BSP’s Brahmin face. Party sources say Misra will campaign in Himachal Pradesh elections but for Gujarat the party leadership has picked former minister Ramveer Upadhyay. In fact,Upadhyay is the only Brahmin leader of the party from Uttar Pradesh who has been given the responsibility of campaigning in Gujarat.

Friendly ‘fire’

An additional SP got shunted out from Saharanpur district just because he displayed much familiarity and friendliness with an old classmate. Sources said the man who did not relish the police officer’s overtures was Minister of Rural Engineering Services Rajendra Singh Rana. They said the ASP kept behaving like an old classmate with Rana, even after Rana dropped hints that he,as a minister, expected due deference from a government officer. On Monday night, the ASP got marching orders to Lucknow, after Rana complained to the police bosses about his behaviour.

Little seems to have gone right with the national coaching camp for the World Junior Badminton Championships, which begin at Chiba in Japan on October 25. The camp began at UP Badminton Academy two days after it was scheduled on October 9. Then, star players P V Sindhu and Sameer Verma withdrew due to injuries. Though foreign coach Dwi Kristiwan started training the shuttlers on October 15,chief national coach Pullela Gopichand arrived on October 18,only to leave after two days as he had to look after the “coaching of the seniors”. In fact, sources said Gopichand came to Lucknow in spite of his other commitments only on the insistence of a BAI official.
