Tide turns against BSP MP
BSP MP from Jaunpur Dhananjay Singh must be a worried man. His patron Babu Singh Kushwaha, who was regarded as Chief Minister Mayawatis shadow,is out of the ministry in unsavoury circumstances. His rival in Jaunpurs local politics Silk and Textile Minister Jagdish Narayan Rai,who is an MLA from Bayalasi, seems to have acquired a new importance. In the latest reshuffle,Mayawati gave Rai Vocational Education as well. Also,Rai was among the four ministers whom the Chief Minister summoned for an exclusive meeting at her residence the others were Naseemuddin Siddiqui,Indrajit Saroj and Swami Prasad Maurya. Even Jagdish Rai was surprised by the invitation, said a party leader. Sources said Rai was against Dhananjay Singhs induction when he was brought into the BSP from JD-U in 2008. Later,he watched helplessly as Dhananjay managed an Assembly ticket for his father and also got his men placed in other important positions. Now,the tide is turning in Rais favour.
SP set for battle for survival
The series of electoral reverses since 2007 seems to have mellowed the Samajwadi Party. In its first list of candidates for the 2012 Assembly elections, the party has given clear signals that it is open for electoral understanding with others. Except for accommodating sitting MLAs and old loyalists, the party has refrained from announcing candidates for urban constituencies. In spite of the Congress rebuff in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, and Rahul Gandhis statements that the Congress will go alone, the SP has not lost hope. The party leadership realises that 2012 is going to be a battle for survival. If it wins the next Assembly polls, then only will it be in any reckoning in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The SP is not averse even to the idea of doing business with the Ajit Singh who had recently formed a confederation of smaller parties which were needling the SP in eastern UP.
Darul Uloom in list dispute
Darul Uloom,Deoband, has got itself entangled in a dispute over the distribution of tickets for the 2012 Assembly elections by the Samajwadi Party. The party had expelled Mavia Ali,a native of Deoband who was state secretary of the SP,in February when he supported Maulana Vastanvi in the faction fight at the seminary. Mavia Ali had then said that he is a Muslim first and a member of the Samajwadi Party later. Subsequently, the SP mended the fences with him and reportedly assured him that he would be given the ticket from neighbouring Muzaffarnagar district. Nevertheless, his name does not figure in the list of candidates. Mavia Ali has now approached the Darul Ifta of the Darul Uloom, seeking a fatwa (religious edict) on whether his statement that he is a Muslim first and a member of the Samajwadi Party later was in any way contrary to the tenets of his faith. Sources said Darul Ifta is likely to rule in his favour. Will Maulana Mulayam ignore Darul Iftas opinion?
Cong ministers courtesy call
Until recently, many Central ministers visiting UP would complete the official business, visit their own area and then fly back to New Delhi, without bothering to make a courtesy call at the Congress party office. In fact, some of them deliberately avoided Lucknow to stay clear of local politics. There were occasions when the party had no information that a minister was visiting Lucknow. So,the high command has told the ministers to visit the party headquarters whenever they are visiting Lucknow,or any nearby area. In the last fortnight,Mukul Wasnik,Sriprakash Jaiswal, and Pradeep Jain Aditya made it a point to visit the party office, even if briefly.
