The other Parivar
The BJP may rant about Parivarvaad in Congress, but it is losing the battle against Parivarvaad within. Lalji Tandon had moved heaven and earth to get party ticket for his son Ashutosh in the Lucknow West assembly by-election and failed. Now Ashutosh has been inducted in the state executive. Rajnath Singhs son Amit Singh Pankaj, too, has been inducted. For Pankaj, the wait has been really long. In 2007,he had managed to get the party ticket from Chiraigaon assembly constituency in Varanasi, but had to withdraw after allegations of nepotism. The story was repeated when he was appointed president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. Luckily for him, there have been no protests this time. But why sons, even a son-in-law has managed to get a position. Regional secretary for Azamgarh in Gorakhpur region Devendra Singh is son-in-law of west zone coordinator Ramji Singh.
Too hot to handle
Those considered possible alternatives to Rita Bahuguna Joshi are said to be unwilling to become state Congress president. Raj Babbar,Nirmal Khatri,Jitin Prasada,Salman Khurshid, all have reportedly conveyed their unwillingness to the high command. Since the assembly elections are barely one-and-a-half-year away, the state presidents post will become the hot seat in a few months. The political temperature will rise, claims for party tickets will multiply and the state president will become an easy target for anyone with a grievance. The person will be expected to work 24×7,with the party high command keeping a constant watch. Naturally, people do not want to quit their present comfort zones for such a demanding task. The situation favours Bahuguna Joshi. Also, she is the only woman state president of the party across the country. But many believe a second term for her cant be taken for granted.
Left out
Last weeks reshuffle in the Indian Youth Congress has left none from Uttar Pradesh in the national committee. Last year,it had two men from the state. Abdul Hafiz Gandhi,a former Aligarh Muslim University students union president who was among the first few youths handpicked by Rahul Gandhi in 2008 during the talent hunt in the state and Nadeem Javed from Jaunpur, who had earlier served as the NSUI president, were appointed IYC secretaries. Sources said both have been told that they will be given better responsibilities. A week after the reshuffle, however, the suspense over their future role continues.
Who will bell the cat
The Ghaziabad Development Authoritys decision to reserve residential plots for MLAs and MLCs has touched a raw nerve among IAS and IPS officers. Several states have such schemes for IAS and IPS officers, but not Uttar Pradesh. The problem, however,is who will take up the issue with the government. The IAS and the IPS associations in the state have been virtually defunct since the present government assumed office so much so that they have failed to hold even their annual meetings regularly.
Rising above adversity
Amit Prabhakar is a promising hockey player who has represented India in several tournaments, including SAF Games in Dhaka and Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament in Malaysia. He just returned after participating in the four-nation hockey tournament in Germany and the Test series in Belgium,France and Holland. Amit is a trainee of the Sports Hostel,Lucknow. His father, who worked in the Sports College mess, died last year. His mother works as a cook at the college and stayed there in a hut, along with Amits brother and sister, until principal A K Banoda allotted her a quarter last week. Amits story shows how some people can excel in spite of adversity. Amit says hockey is his obsession and he does not mind the hardship, but somewhere it rankles that had he been a cricketer, life would have been better for his family.
