Lucknows GenY detests television as a gadget and is least interested in government jobs. Every second student owns a laptop and every fourth students loves tweeting. Eighty per cent access Internet from home and 21 per cent get access in schools.
A survey placing the student community in the city on a par with national digital trends (sometimes even ahead of them) was released today by Tata Consultancy Services.
The survey, which aimed at understanding digital trends in metro and minimetro cities among Generation Y,was conducted between July and December 2011. Around 12,329 students of Class 8 to 12 (age group of 12 to 18 years) from Ahmedabad,Bangalore,Chuwaneshwar,Chennai,Coimbatore,Delhi,Hyderabad,Kochi,Kolkata,Lucknow,Mumbai and Pune were surveyed. From Lucknow, around 1,200 students participated in the survey.
The results showed a phenomenal rise of Facebook users in the city in the said age group within the last two years. In 2009,16 per cent youths used Facebook while now,80 per cent of the students use the social networking site, which is on a par with the All-India percentage of Facebook users, Krishna said. One of every four students is now on Twitter whereas 42.98 per cent are available on Orkut.
Television is the least popular gadget with 0.02 per cent liking television in Lucknow. The figures are lowest among all surveyed cities and much lower than the national average, said Krishna.
According to the report, accessibility to Internet, subscription to social networking sites and ownership of gadgets like laptops and mobiles have increased tremendously in the city. Every second student in the city owns a laptop, which is on a par with the all-India average, and 70.5 per cent students own a personal computer at home. With high penetration of Internet in school and at home, cybercafes are not popular these days.
Further, merely 3 per cent of the surveyed population showed interest in pursuing a career in government services, which is even lower than the national average of 6.65 per cent. This is interesting given the notion that people in Uttar Pradesh are supposed to be more inclined towards government jobs, said Krishna.
