Local rains greet eastern UP,monsoon soon: Met office

Most parts of Lucknow and eastern Uttar Pradesh received rainfall on Sunday,providing relief to the people from severe heat conditions prevailing for over a month now.

The Meteorological office,however,said the rainfall was caused due “a local phenomenon and not the monsoon”. Monsoon is expected to reach eastern UP on June 30 and Lucknow the next day,it added. Western UP,however,may have to wait for rains for another five days.

“An upper air cyclonic circulation created over eastern UP resulted in rain in various districts today,” said Met Director J P Gupta.

Sharda Nagar (Lakhimpuri Kheri) received maximum rainfall at 69 mm,Bahraich recorded 55 mm,Gonda 45 mm,Varanasi 15.2 mm,Gorakhpur 9.5 mm and Devaria 5 mm. In Lucknow,rainfall was trace. In Bundelkhand region,14.8 mm rainfall was reported in Jhansi district.

According to Met officials,light rain or thundershowers are likely in eastern UP and isolated areas of western parts of the state during the next 48 hours. Maximum temperature in eastern UP will range from 35 to 38 degree Celsius,said Gupta. The upper air cyclone is likely to move towards western UP in the next few hours.

After the rainfall on Sunday,maximum temperature in Lucknow was recorded at 35 degree Celsius — five degrees less than that of Saturday. Similarly,maximum temperature in Allahabad on Sunday came down by 3.3 degree Celsius,Bahraich 6.1 degree Celsius and Varanasi 2 degree Celsius,as compared to Saturday.

According to Gupta,this year,monsoon in the state will bring nearly 81 per cent of the normal rainfall. Usually,monsoon enters UP on June 18,but this year,it has been delayed by over a fortnight.
