Reacting to the leaked US cables on UP Chief Minister Mayawati, the Opposition parties on Monday claimed they exposed the chief minister’s double standards on the nuclear deal issue, besides further corroborating their allegations against her of misusing government machinery.

While the BJP claimed the US cables on Mayawati’s stand over Indo-US nuclear deal have further strengthened Mayawati’s public impression as a hypocrite, the main Opposition party in the state Samajwadi Party said it was an unfortunate situation in her rule that bureaucrats spoke over political issues. The Congress said the leaked US cable exposed Mayawati and her party’s double standards.

“The cables have just reproduced what everyone knows (about Mayawati),” said SP’s national general secretary Mohan Singh. However,Singh criticised Mayawati for allowing her Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh to speak over political issues. “Singh’s statement on Mayawati’s chances of becoming PM is in violation of the government servants conduct rules,” SP leader further said.

Addressing a press conference in the BJP’s state office in Lucknow on Monday, party’s national vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the disclosure on Mayawati’s stand on nuclear deal has further established her image of being hypocrite.

Referring to the cables released by WikiLeaks regarding alleged use of a private jet by the CM to bring her a pair of sandals,Naqvi said this was a fresh challenge for the state’s pride. “She naturally did not spend the huge money from her own pockets,” Naqvi said. This is a new story about her ‘chartered chappals’,Naqvi said.

He also added he had heard the story about the tight security measures Mayawati has ensured for the safety of her “chamatakarik chappals” (Charismatic Chappals). Naqvi was referring to the recent media reports about cleaning of CM’s sandals by her security officer.

In a press release, chief spokesperson of the UP Congress Subodh Srivatsva said it confirmed the Congress allegations of her misusing the government machinery for personal needs. He added even her most trusted bureaucrat was not enough confident of her chances of becoming the PM.
