Keeping in mind the large number cases where women have faced harassment in Kanpur, the district police have decided to invoke National Security Act (NSA) against those involved in such activities in case these lead to a law and order situation.
Since January 2009,nine such cases have led to violence in the industrial city.
In a recent case at Gadriya Mohaal, the police have invoked NSA against three persons.
Rishi,Sachin and Amit allegedly tore the clothes of Shuklaganj resident Swati (name changed) and thrashed her brother late Wednesday night. Kanpur DIG Hari Ram Sharma told The Indian Express: There is a proper procedure to slap NSA. A case has been forwarded to the district magistrate to invoke NSA against the three.
Though all cases of harassment will be dealt in accordance to the law,NSA will be invoked only if it leads to a law and order problem or where the accused has also indulged in violence, he added.
Sharma admitted there has been an increase in harassment cases against women in the city. It is extremely important to teach a befitting lesson to such people, he said.
