In Hameerpur, police lathi turns prop for the suffering elderly

In addition to their primary responsibility of ensuring law and order, the men in khaki in Hameerpur district of Uttar Pradesh have taken it upon themselves to ensure that the elderly here are taken care of.

In addition to their primary responsibility of ensuring law and order, the men in khaki in Hameerpur district of Uttar Pradesh have taken it upon themselves to ensure that the elderly here are taken care of. The benefits have reached nearly 50 people in the district comprising 13 police stations including Rat,Mohdaha,Sumerpur,Muskara,Biwar,Sisolar,Jaria and Lalpura.

The initiative gathered momentum when former Hameerpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Suryanath Singh adopted one K Prashad five months ago after he found him during a village inspection. Singh was so moved by Prasad’s sad plight that he decided to underatke his responsibility, said Gauri Shankar,a social worker, who has been helping the cops ‘identify’ the elderly people.

Inspired by Singh’s act, most other officers in the district have decided to adopt at least one elderly person each.

“The movement was initiated a few months ago by former Hameerpur SP Suryanath Singh. Even After the SP was transferred, the station officers of all 13 police stations and DSPs of four circles have continued with the good work. The new SP has also decided to adopt one such person,” said Additional SP A K Pandey.

The DSPs and station officers have been assigned the task of tracing such hapless persons and ensuring that they are provided the benefits they deserve under various government schemes like widow pension and old age pension. The officers also extend monetary help, besides ensuring the provision of food and clothes to them, said the ASP.

“I have adopted Sumeri,a 65-year-old widow whom I found on a tehsil diwas. She had been abandoned by her son. After seeing my efforts to help her,the residents of her Jhakar village have also come forward to help,” added the ASP.

The policemen have been asked to visit the adopted persons once every week. It is also the duty of the station officers to sensitise people on the issue, added the ASP.
