Gas pipe ruptures,leak creates panic
Panic gripped Khandsar area of Shahjahanpur following a leak in the underground pipeline of GAIL on Wednesday evening. Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Ramakant Maurya said the leakage took place after the underground pipeline got ruptured by a tree which fell on the Katra-Jalalabad Road during a storm. Chief Manager of GAIL for Uttar Pradesh,Hirdesh Kumar,said that the gas was not poisonous but explosive. Two teams of engineers had reached spot and were engaged in repair work. The ADM said the pipeline supplies Naphtha and gas to a fertiliser plant in Shahjahanpur.

Haj passport: Date of submission extended
To facilitate Haj pilgrimage,the Uttar Pradesh Haj Committee has extended the last date for submission of passports from June 30 to July 15. The order regarding the extension of submission dates was issued after a government order in this regard,said M A A Khan,the committee’s Officer on Special Duty. Khan said the decision was taken in wake of the problems faced by successful applicants to procure their passports.

PM to visit IIT-K on July 3
Kanpur: Arrangements are being made for live FM radio broadcast of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s address at the golden jubilee celebrations of IIT-Kanpur on July 3,an official said on Wednesday. Large LCD screens are also being put up near the venue of the function for students and IIT employees to witness the event. “The Prime Minister has been invited as the chief guest of the 42th annual convocation of the institute on July 3,” said IIT-K Registrar Sanjeev Kasalkar. Tight security arrangements are being made at the institute premises ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.

2 electrocuted in Lakhimpur
Lakhimpur: Two elderly women were electrocuted on Wednesday when a high tension wire fell on them in Malpur village on Wednesday. Devki (65) and Shyam Pyari (62) were electrocuted when the high tension wire fell on their hutments early this morning,said UPPCL Sub-Divisional Officer U K Agrawal. Irate over the deaths,locals blocked the Bhira-Gaurifanta state highway and demanded the immediate removal of high tension wires.

Case against cops in 2006 encounter
The state CB-CID registered a case against 15 policemen on Wednesday,in connection with the murder of one Suresh Gangapasi,who was killed in a police encounter in 2006. “The team against whom the case has been lodged includes the then station officer of the Gomti Nagar police station,Ramanand Yadav,and outpost in-charge Anjani Rai. The other accused are constables,” said Akshay Kumar,in-charge of the Gomti Nagar police station. Meanwhile,the state government handed over the probe into the cases relating to police gunners procured on fake government orders in Ghaziabad and Meerut to the CB-CID,said Secretary (Home) Deepak Kumar.

Pinki Jowel new Sultanpur DM
The state government made Pinki Jowel the new district magistrate of Sultanpur. She is currently posted as special secretary in the Finance department.

Three contract killers arrested
While conducting simultaneous raids in Azamgarh,Jaunpur and Sultanpur on Wednesday,the Mumbai police arrested three contract killers wanted for shootouts that had taken place in the last few years. Brij Lal,ADG (Law & Order),said the Mumbai police had contacted the state police for help in arresting criminals like Shakir (Azamgarh),Pankaj Singh (Sultanpur) and Ravi Prakash Singh (Jaunpur district). A police team from Lucknow helped their Mumbai counterparts in tracing the accused. The arrested had executed shootouts,including some killings for the Chhota Rajan gang in Mumbai. Jafar,a native of Ambedkar Nagar district,at present lodged in a Mumbai jail and Rajesh Yadav — lodged in Mirzapur jail — used to take contracts from the gang. The three arrested used to execute the contracts,said Lal.

Two of a family shot dead
Two members of a family were shot dead and another sustained injuries in Sitapur district’s Kotwali area on Wednesday. Jagdish Prasad (65),his wife Ramkali (61) and daughter-in-law Sudha Gupta were shot by unidentified persons at their Chaudhary Tola residence. The trio was taken to the hospital where Jagdish and Ramkali were declared dead on arrival.
