Teachers panel member held for beating up Dalit
The district president of the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Teachers Association,Neeta Awasthi,who was facing charges of beating up a Dalit clerk at the District Inspector of School (DIOS) office,was arrested on Thursday evening. Barabanki SP Navneet Rana said Awasthi was arrested while she was on her way to Lucknow along with an MLC,Devi Dayal Shasthri. Awdhesh Kumar,an accountant posted with the Barabanki DIOS office,had lodged an FIR against Awasthi on Thursday morning. He had alleged that on March 29,Awasthi had come to his office and asked for details of government fund spent in the last financial year on various heads related to teachers. As he refused to furnish the details till the DIOS issued orders in this regard,Awasthi reportedly beat him up. Awasthi was produced before the court in the evening,from where she was sent to judicial custody.
Seven arrested for betting in IPL matches
The police have claimed to unearth a betting racket after they arrested seven members of the gang from City Kotwali area in Mathura late on Wednesday night. Five laptops,Rs 2.10 lakh in cash,a register containing names of the clients and 13 mobile phones were recovered from a room where the accused engaged in betting,said the police. Mathura SSP B D Paulson said the gang was active since the IPL cricket tournament began. The gang members used to get instruction from some bookies in cities like Delhi,Mumbai and Kolkata.
After the match between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils on Wednesday night,the police raided the house of one Vikas Chaturvedi alias Pappu Don at Satta Bazar locality and found him and six others engaged in making post match deals with the clients.
While a few were speaking to the bookies on mobile phones,others were making list of the people who had lost or made money in the betting. Besides Chaturvedi,others are leading businessmen of the city,the SSP added.
UPPCL employees end strike
The two-day strike by over 50,000 employees of UPPCL was called off late on Thursday night following an assurance by the corporation that no unit will be privatised. The employees went on a strike on Wednesday protesting power distribution in Agra being handed over to Torrent Power. The UPPCL reportedly assured that it will review the decision to transfer the power distribution network to the private company on input-based franchisee model.
Two arrested for murder
Greater Noida: The Noida police arrested two contractual labourers for murdering Pawan Upadhayay,the HR head of Intra Arch. Upadhayay was murdered on March 24 and his body found in Greater Noida. Surendra Verma,SP (Rural),said the murder was committed by the driver of the deceased with his two friends.
Two hawkers die in accident
Two newspaper hawkers died when a rashly-driven truck hit them in Lucknows Krishna Nagar area on Thursday morning. The erring truck driver fled after the accident. The deceased have been identified as Atul (20) and Sandeep (22) both residents of Sarojini Nagar. An FIR has been filed against the unidentified driver. No one has been arrested so far, said Inspector (Krishna Nagar) Virendra Kumar.
