In BJP,turncoats failed to bring a turnaround

The BJP’s decision to give tickets to turncoats did not work magic as only four of 32 such candidates nominated by the party won the election.

The BJP’s decision to give tickets to turncoats did not work magic as only four of 32 such candidates nominated by the party won the election. These turncoats had joined the BJP in the last one year.

Among the most prominent turncoats to lose are former BSP ministers Daddan Mishra,Awdhesh Kumar Verma and Badshah Singh. Daddan was Bhinga MLA and Awdhesh represented Dadraul in the last House. Both had joined BJP on January 4 this year and on the very same day,their name featued in the BJP list of nominees. Both sought re-election from their previous constituencies and lost. Daddan got 45,264 votes. He was defeated by Samajwadi Party. Awdhesh came a poor third with 28,845 votes. Badshah secured 30,350 votes and came fourth in Mahoba.

Jokhulal Yadav,the former Samajwadi Party MLA from Pratappur,wanted to contest from Phulpur. SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav,however,denied him the ticket. So he joined BJP in January and got the ticket to contest from Phulpur. Two months later,Yadav was defeated by SP’s Sayeed Ahmad. He came a distant fourth with 12,009 votes.

In Kursi,BJP had nominated Raj Laxmi Verma. She had been BJP candidate from Ram Nagar seat in every Assembly polls since 1991,but left BJP to join BSP two years ago. She returned to the party to contest from Kursi,but came third with 34,169 votes

Bahoranlal Maurya is another case. He was a BJP MLA in 1996. Six years later,he contested again on BJP ticket but lost. He then left BJP to join BSP. But few days before the 2007 election,he joined BJP and got the ticket to contest from Bhojipura. He has come third with 34,281 votes.

Under the influence of party MP from Azamgarh Ramakant Yadav,BJP fielded his son Arun Yadav from Jalalpur who too lost. He came fourth and was 77,000 votes behind the winning candidate. In 2007,Arun had contested on SP ticket from Phulpur. He joined BJP last Decembera along with Ramdarshan Yadav,former Azamgarh district president of SP. Ramdarshan also got BJP ticket to contest from Mubarakpur and like Arun came fourth.
