The state government has suspended five officials,including three engineers,for their alleged laxity in supervising the construction of a bridge on Yamuna in Banda — part of which collapsed last month. “Following the inquiry report submitted by IIT-Delhi Professor S N Sinha,the government suspended five officials yesterday,” said a release on Thursday. Those suspended are project manager (Civil) Ghanshyam Pandey,deputy project manager (Civil) M K Jama,assistant engineer S K Garg and junior engineers D N Singh and R K Jaiswal. According to the report,a small area of concrete around the collapsed surface was not strong enough. Elsewhere,the concrete was found to be of adequate strength. A part of the 1,086-meter-long bridge — inaugurated by Minister Nasimuddin Siddiqui on November 18 — had collapsed after a few days of inauguration.

Two more die of cold,toll reaches 15

With the death of two more persons in different parts of UP on Thursday,the death toll due to the cold wave has reached 15. This,despite a rise in the minimum temperatures at several places. While a 35-year-old man died in Barabanki district,one death was reported from Siddharth Nagar district in the last 24 hours. While Etawah — a minimum temperature of 6 degree Celsius — was the coldest place in the state,minimum temperature in Gorakhpur hovered at 7.8 degree Celsius — two notches below normal. While Lucknow recorded a minimum of 9 degree Celsius,which was two degree above normal,the minimum in Aligarh was 14.4 degree Celsius — five notches above normal.
