Home Guards to enforce ban on spitting

The next time you visit the Lucknow Development Authority office, there is a high possibility of witnessing a spick-and-span office, minus the red stains on the walls.

The next time you visit the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) office, there is a high possibility of witnessing a spick-and-span office, minus the red stains on the walls.

Failing to stop the employees and visitors from spitting paan masala within the office premises by imposing a ban,the LDA has now deployed Home Guards to catch hold of such people.

Now,Home Guards, carrying canes, will be posted on each floor of the LDA building.

About a year ago, the Authority had introduced a fine of Rs 500 on those found flouting the ban on smoking and chewing pan. But it failed to have any effect as no one was responsible for enforcing it.

Beside keeping a check on smoking and spitting pan masala within the building, the Home Guards will also keep a close watch on the activities of the visitors, said LDA Vice-Chairman (V-C) Mukesh Kumar Meshram.

“We have been directed to realise the fine from those who spit or smoke in the building. If anyone refuses,we have the orders to catch them and present them either before the vice-chairman or the security supervisor,” said Hansraj,a Home Guard.

Sanjeev, another Home Guard, said after they were deployed on Monday,he had already realised the fine from three persons. “They were all outsiders and they were spitting in the building. When I asked them to pay the fine, they ignored me. But when I told them that they will be presented before the V-C,they decided to pay the fine,” said Sanjeev.

D M Katiyar, security in-charge of the LDA office, said that the deployment of the Home Guards had really made a difference and some employees had already been fined.

“With incidents of official files missing in the last few months, these guards will not allow any outsider to carry documents outside the building,” Meshram said.
