HC seeks information on criteria for VIP security

The Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court directed the state government on Monday to submit the details of the policy/criteria that was being used to provide security cover to VIPs and VVIPs in the state.

The Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court directed the state government on Monday to submit the details of the policy/criteria that was being used to provide security cover to VIPs and VVIPs in the state.

The Bench comprising Justices Pradeep Kant and Ritu Raj Awasthi was hearing a writ petition seeking to withdraw the Z-category security cover of Pramod Tiwari, leader of the Congress Legislative Party.

The petition moved by one Abhay Singh of Pratapgarh claims that Tiwari, who is an MLA,has been given Z- security cover since 1989.

The petitioner claims that when a legislator is entitled to get only one gunner as per the government order,Tiwari has got 52 police personnel for his security.

Charging Tiwari with misusing his security cover, the petitioner claimed that the Congress leader faces no threat from terrorist groups. Hence, the state exchequer should not be used to provide security to him.

In an annexure attached with the writ, the petitioner has admitted having lodged as many as 9 cases against Tiwari for intimidating and physically abusing him and his family members.

“Using his political influence,he has managed to get the final report favouring him in all the cases,” said Singh. Tiwari admitted that Z-security cover has been provided to him. He,however, denied having any information about the writ petition.
