Handball: UP starts campaign on winning note

Hosts Uttar Pradesh started its campaign on a winning note in the National Junior Girls’ Handball Championships which commenced at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,Lucknow on Wednesday.

Hosts Uttar Pradesh started its campaign on a winning note in the National Junior Girls’ Handball Championships which commenced at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,Lucknow on Wednesday. It outclassed Tamil Nadu 13-5 in the inaugural match to collect full 2 points in its Group ‘A’match.

The half-time score was 11-3 in favour of UP. On behalf of the victors,Srishti (4 goals),Sonam Singh (3 goals),Babita Yadav (2 goals),Nisha (2 goals),Supriya (1 goal) and Neha (I goal) were the goal-getters. From Tamil Nadu,Diksha and Varshney netted two goals each.

Four matches were organised in the morning session as well. In a group ‘B’ match,Maharashtra beat Orissa 11-4,in Group ‘A’ Chhattisgarh beat Tamil Nadu 12-7 while in Pool ‘D’ Punjab beat Chandigarh 13-2.

The draw for the tournament took place on Wednesday morning itself.

The participating teams have been divided into four groups. Group ‘A’ has Delhi,Chhattisgarh,Himanchal Pradesh,West Bengal,Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh; Group ‘B’ features Maharashtra,Manipur,Assam,Karnataka and Orissa; Group ‘C’ comprises of Haryana,Kerala,Uttarakhand,Maharashtra Academy,Madhya Pradesh and Tripura while Group ‘D’ has Andhra Pradesh,Punjab,Jharkhand,Rajasthan,Chandigarh and Bihar.
