Hail Lucknow

Rains of Mumbai can’t wash away actress Sumona Chakravarti’s memories of rains and hail in Lucknow.

Rains of Mumbai can’t wash away actress Sumona Chakravarti’s memories of rains and hail in Lucknow. “In Mumbai, you never get to see oley (hailstones). In Lucknow,I used to collect them whenever they fell,” chirps the girl who plays spoilt brat Natasha alias Nuts in the serial Bade Achchhe Lagte Hain on Sony TV. “My first school was Red Hill in Lucknow, after which I studied in Loreto Convent till class IV. I have such fond memories of the city, which I visited last year to meet my maternal grandparents,” she says on phone in between shoot for the serial.

“I don’t think the character I play is of a vamp…she is a talented dress designer, fiercely business-like and all the attitude she throws comes out of her affluent background. I used to be in the most uptown college of Mumbai and my classmates were from super rich families for whom money was nothing to make an issue out of,so I can understand such people without villainising them,” she says, presenting the stance of wealthy people who are often mistaken for arrogant because of their unusual demeanour and demand for quality.

Proof of how successful is her portrayal of the character lies in the disdain it has evoked among the viewers. “I get the daggers from people when I step out. They look at me like they want to kill me,” she chuckles. But there are admirers too. “Like this guy at a mall who came up to me and, referring to the intimate scene featuring Natasha and Kartik, said the character I play was every man’s fantasy,” she shares.

Sumona is diplomatic about the suggestion that Natasha Kapoor is fleshed out of what the show’s producer Ektaa Kapoor actually is. “The similarity is to the extent that both are workaholics and settle for only the best. But as far as arrogance goes,Ektaa is sweet and I can’t think of such a comfort level with any other producer,” says the actress who earlier was part of another Balaji show,Kasamm Se.

She identifies more with Ektaa than Natasha. “At the end of the day,I am that girl brought up in a middle-class environment. I have ridden cycle-rickshaws and slogged my way, whether in pursuit of my Economics Hons degree,or career.”

As for the chance that the serial may soon change track or another actress may replace her for the same character, she says she cares but doesn’t let the worry drive her nuts. “I have bigscreen ambitions too,but only the best will do for me,” she beams.
