Granny Award Goes To…

If there were a Granny award, actor Farrukh Jaffar would be a strong contender.

If there were a Granny award, actor Farrukh Jaffar would be a strong contender. The bed-ridden,foul-mouthed mother of Peepli Live has graduated to being a bed-ridden,wisdom-espousing grandmother of Tanu Weds Manu.

Jaffer,of course, doesn’t want to age, gracefully or otherwise. “Directors are offering me only senior citizens roles. That is unfortunate since I feel much younger and would like to portray a much younger, more pro-active character,” says the 74-year-old,who was the first AIR announcer from Lucknow.

In the romantic-comedy Tanu Weds Manu, releasing on February 25,Jaffer’s character is constantly at loggerheads with her brash and irreverent granddaughter,a small town girl played by Kangna Ranaut. Though she does not use profanities,Jaffar continues to express herself with a rustic charm that is becoming her trademark. “I object to Ranaut’s character’s flippant attitude towards relationships and her obsession with experimenting with looks,” adds Jaffar, whose pastime is knitting, gardening and needle-work.

The actor has also signed another film,Kuch Log,co- starring Anupam Kher and Gulshan Grover. “I will continue acting as long as I can shoot in Lucknow. I don’t like travelling far from home especially to Mumbai, kyunki woh ek paagalkhana hai ,” she signs off.
