The state government has planned to develop 168-km road stretch between Mainpuri and Bareilly as a National Highway.
The government has received a proposal from the UP Public Works Department (UPPWD) in this regard, which will soon be sent to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval.
According to a UPPWD official, the traffic load is on the rise in this stretch and it is further expected to enhance after construction of a new bridge near Mainpuri.
Once the road is converted as national highway,it would be widened up to 7 metres from the current width of 3.75 metre, said Sushil Kumar, chief engineer,UPPWD.
According to the officials, the developed highway will connect Mainpuri and Kanshi Ram Nagar to New Delhi via Bareilly.
If the Central government agrees to the proposal of the state government,National Highways Authority of India will assign the task to develop the National Highway but before that the state government will have to hand over the stretch to National Highways Authority of India.
The cost of the project will be calculated by National Highways Authority of India after the Central government gives its nod, Kumar said.
