The superintendent of Ghazipur jail was suspended today following a recommendation from the prisons headquarters. The recommendation had been sent to the government after a preliminary inquiry found that negligence on his part had led to the deaths of three undertrials in the jail.
ADG (Prisons-Headquarters) V K Gupta said that Superintendent B C Yadav has been suspended following dereliction of duty. Three inmates Ram Bachan,Wasim Ahmed and Guddu had fallen critically ill mysteriously after consuming cold drinks purchased from the jail canteen on June 22. While two died on the same day,Guddu succumbed after two days.
A murder case was registered at the City Kotwali on June 24 against unidentified persons following a complaint from Superintendent Yadav. Asked today about the developments in the case,Ghazipur SP (City) Shalabh Mathur said that the investigation in the case is yet to begin,as they are waiting for the forensic test report to confirm if the cold drinks had been laced with any poisonous substance. A letter seeking the report as soon as possible has already been sent to the laboratory,added Mathur.
