With two films lined up for release, another four in the making and a just-launched home production,Abhishek Bachchan has reason to smile

He is happy to be home, finally. After all,Abhishek Bachchan has spent most part of the last six months on what could be termed as a world tour. Shooting for Game took him across Greece,Istanbul,London and Thailand. The first schedule of Players demanded his presence in New Zealand and allowed him a brief break only to walk the red carpet at the Academy Awards with wife Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan. Currently, busy with the Mumbai schedule of Players,The Italian Job’s remake by Abbas-Mastan,the actor — always a man of few words — reflects on the various facets of his career in a conversation with Dipti Nagpaul-D’Souza.

Game’s on

Game has an ensemble cast and I play one of the five key characters. These characters are connected but are unaware of this fact. The film takes off when they assemble on an island following an anonymous invite. A murder happens, following which the hunt for the killer starts. Passionate about whodunnits — I grew up on Sherlock Holmes — I was drawn to the plot. The killer’s identity will be public within two days of the release of the film. So,the journey that the film takes the audience through, has to be interesting enough to bring people to the theatre. And I found Game’s script gripping enough. And add to that the visual edge director Abhinay Deo would lend, given his two decade-long experience in ad filmmaking.

Thrilling Ride

I Love action though I haven’t done much of it. But now I’m doing back-to-back action thrillers — Game, followed by Dum Maaro Dum,Players and then Dhoom 3. It takes a lot out of an actor, physically, but Raavan prepared me for it. No one does action better than Abbas-Mastan. We’ve been trying to work together for a long time and must have discussed 10 films among us. Somehow our dates never worked out. But what I’m looking forward to most is working with Aamir Khan in Dhoom. We’ve never had a chance to work together. And then Rajkumar Santoshi’s Ladies and Gentlemen and Dostana 2 should lend me some comic relief.

Friends forever

Rohan Sippy, has been a very close friend since childhood, and Game is our third film together after Kuch Naa Kaho and Bluffmaster. We share the kind of camaraderie where sometimes,we have to keep our banter in check on the sets since our equation may make our other colleagues feel left out. But if you ask me why I keep working with Rohan again and again,I’d say it’s because he keeps reinventing himself. He never repeats himself in terms of genre and takes his time to work on each film.

Tough luck

Well, aren’t box-office failures all part of the job? If a hit and flop is all that mattered, then I wouldn’t have so many films lined up next.

Mr Moneybags

After Paa and Vihir in Marathi,we have recently rolled out AB Corp’s next production,Bbuddah – Hoga Tera Baap with dad (Amitabh Bachchan). It’s being helmed by Puri Jagannath, whom I met through Ram Gopal Varma. Puri told me that he has a film that could suit dad and we found it very exciting. What I love about it is that we’ll get to see dad in his most admired avatar of the angry young man, only that he isn’t so young anymore. I’m thoroughly enjoying my role as a producer and I’m very happy to see the company back on it’s feet.
