A fire broke out in one of the laboratories of the National Botanical Research Institute early Saturday morning. Two fire tenders rushed to douse the fire which had engulfed the institutes K N Kaul block and extinguished it within an hour.
The cause of the fire is not known yet. Three to four instruments were damaged in the fire which broke out at 7.30 am. But the exact loss is yet to be figured out.
Short-circuit seems to be the reason but I will set up a committee on Monday to look into the cause and assess the damage,said K C Gupta,Director,NBRI.
Three rooms on the second floor of the lab caught fire. A sealed LPG cylinder kept in one of the rooms was safely removed but the furniture and instruments in the room were severely damaged, said P C Gautam,Fire Station Officer,Hazratganj.
He added,The building had a fire alarm system but it was not active. On the other hand,Gupta said he had no clue whether the fire system was in place in the laboratory or not. Sources said the damage in the fire might run into lakhs of rupees as the instruments in the lab were very expensive.
