FIR against 9 cops for robbing man

Acting on the direction of State Human Rights Commission,an FIR was lodged on Friday against nine policemen,including two sub-inspectors,for allegedly robbing a businessman of Rs 1.66 lakh in Shahjahanpur district in 2008.

The SHRC had earlier received a complaint from the victim,Shiv Shankar Agnihotri.

Agnihotri,50,had also alleged that the policemen had falsely implicated him in a counterfeit currency case. The FIR has been registered under section 395 (dacoity) of the IPC. “We are trying to locate the current postings of the policemen named in the FIR,” said Station Officer,Bandda Police Station,RP Singh.

The nine policemen are Sub-Inspectors Layak Singh and Jai Singh,constables Shyam Narayan,Ahibaran,Kadir Khan,Narendra Singh and Pramod Agnihotri. The ninth,Beni Prasad Verma, retired as DSP.

Circle Officer of Shahjahanpur,Rajesh Kumar Sonkar,said that if required,“we would look into the criminal case lodged against Shiv Shankar also”.

A resident of village Bilandpur Ashok in Shahjahanpur,Shiv Shankar owns a gun shop in Shahjahanpur. He also runs a plant. According to him,on January 1,2008 police arrived at his shop on two vehicles and asked him to accompany them to Bandda police station. They inquired about one Amresh,a resident of Kandapur village. While on the way to police station,the policemen informed him that they had caught one Vipin who is involved in a counterfeit currency racket and on interrogation Vipin said Amreesh is also member of the racket.

“One of the policemen said Vipin had told them that I knows Vipin’s whereabouts,” said Shiv Shankar. He added when they reached Puwayan area,the policemen parked the vehicle on the roadside and started threatening to implicate him in the case. They demanded Rs 2 lakh in exchange of release.

“I told them that I had no connection with Amresh. Despite pleading them,police refused to release me,” he said. By late evening,his son came and could arrange only Rs 1.65 lakh,after which he was allowed to go. A day later,Shiv Shankar received a call from one of the cops,Beni Prasad Verma, who told him that SP Shahjahanpur had come to know that they had taken money from him. “Verma requested me not to tell anything to SP about the incident. But I narrated the entire incident to the SP after which he ordered an inquiry,” said Shiv Shankar.

Seven days later,Shiv Shankar said a police team came to his house and arrested him in counterfeit case. After coming out from jail,he sent letters to senior police officers and also SHRC,Lucknow detailing them how he was robbed by the policemen and later falsely booked him in a case.

A couple of months later,he was arrested again in the counterfeit currency case lodged in Bareilly. He remained in jail for a month.
