A case has been registered against 24 police officers,including a former station officer (SO) and three sub-inspectors (S-Is) of the then Special Operation Group (SOG) in connection with the killing of a youth in an alleged fake encounter that took place at Ghasipura village in Mansoorpur area on November 29,2008.
The FIR was lodged at Mansoorpur police station in Muzaffarnagar district on Friday following orders of Muzaffarnagar Chief Judicial Magistrate Renu Rao.
The 24 policemen who were part of the police team involved in the encounter include SO of Mansoorpur police station Rajesh Kumar Chauhan,three S-Is of the then district SOG team Parveen Kumar,JS Kanjla and Baljit Singh and 20 others. While a majority of them are at present posted in other districts,Kanjla is serving as SO of Ratanpuri police station in Muzaffarnagar.
The Superintendent of Police (City),Rajiv Malhotra,said Mehtab who was killed by the police had over 32 cases,including those of loot,murder,extortion and attempt to murder,registered against him at different police stations of Muzaffarnagar,Meerut and Baghpat.
Mehtabs father Iliyas had filed a petition before the CJM court alleging that the youth was picked up from his native place in Badaut area of Baghpat district,two days before he was declared killed in a stage-managed encounter.
The petitioner also alleged that they had sent complaints to the senior police officers seeking a probe into the police version,but none of the senior cops responded.
Taking cognizance of the complaint,the CJM court ordered the Muzaffarnagar SSP to register a case against the 24 policemen.
