It was being touted as the meeting where the Bharatiya Janata Party would flesh out the reasons for the UP poll debacle.

But at the end of the meet held on Friday, the party cited that there were “several reasons” for the performance. Plus, that the party was aiming at bouncing back in the Assembly bypolls.

The meeting — the first review meeting held at the party state headquarters after the general elections — was attended by all state office bearers and executive committee members.

National president Rajnath Singh was supposed to attend the meeting but on Thursday Singh made a last minute change in his schedule.

According to sources in the party,Singh was avoiding the meeting as lot of reasons for the party debacle would have been brought to the fore including the closeness between party state president Ramapati Ram Tripathi and Singh. Party’s national general secretary and UP in-charge Arun Jaitley also gave the meeting a miss.

Sources say that he is keeping away from all state activities for a while as he is one of the contenders for the national president’s post and is focusing on national reviews.

Speaking at the meeting,state

election in-charge Kalraj Mishra said the party needs to conduct a socio-political analysis to assess the party’s performance. According to Mishra, the people were looking for an option to oust the Bahujan Samaj Party, which is why they were siding with Congress and Samajwadi Party and in a few places even with the BJP. The party needs to work more towards performing in the Assembly bypolls.

The poor performance, however, did not seem to have affected Ramapati Ram Tripathi. The party, according to Tripathi, may have not won many seats but its vote percentage had surely increased for which he had congratulated the party workers.

Party spokesperson HN Dixit said there were various regional and local reasons for the party’s loss in different constituencies, which would be reviewed.
