Register your opinion even if you find nobody worth your vote, advises Kiran Bedi
The country needs a presidential form of government, instead of the parliamentary form in which numbers come into play. Thus opines Dr Kiran Bedi, the first woman IPS officer, who was in the city to endorse a “health product”.
“There must be a nation-wide debate on switching over to the presidential form of government. Look at the United States and the kind of confidence Barrack Obama has infused into it,” she says, adding,”the politics of numbers takes a heavy toll on the development of our country and ulterior motives overshadow the welfare agenda.”
As if her immaculate block printed salwar suit attire is not a departure enough, her area of work is a paradigm shift from her ” 35 years dedicated to the police force…it’s all I have done and all that I am.” Her social service outfits Navjyoti and India Vision help drug addicts rehabilitate, prisoners reform through education and women get independent. “I have always taken one role at a time, never mixing my duties as a policewoman, housewife,or social worker,” says Bedi, denying categorically that she nursed any aspirations to be a politician: “not at least in this scenario, may be in my next life!”
But the disciplinarian manifests as she goes about managing the jostling battery of mediapersons and bringing the conversation back everytime to the product she is endorsing. “I associated with Ozone Ayurvedics because of the similarity in our viewpoints. They want to free all skin types of blemishes and I dream of a society that is spotless, fair and transparent. ‘No marks’ should be the hallmark of all aspects be it individual, society, orpolitics.”
A keen tennis player, she champions the women’s cause wanting her to know not just rights but also her responsibilities towards self, even as she goes about sacrificing her life for the sake of family.
