Ghazipur MP Radhe Mohan Singh has been barred from contesting elections to Parliament,Legislative Assembly or Legislative Council for a period of three years. In an order issued on February 28,the Election Commission of India (ECI) has disqualified Singh,a Samajwadi Party leader, from being chosen as and for being a member of either House of Parliament or of the Legislative Assembly or Legislative Council of the state.
The order will have an impact on Singhs political career only if the next Lok Sabha elections are held before or in February,2014. However,if the elections take place in May 2014,as per schedule,Singh will be in a position to contest the polls.
Singh has been disqualified because he did not submit the details of expenses he had incurred while contesting the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, said Umesh Sinha, the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh.
As per the order, the action has been taken because Singh failed to lodge any account of his election expenses as required by the Representation of the People Act,1951,and Rules and Orders made thereunder. According to EC officials in UP,Singh was served several notices since 2009,seeking reason or explanation for the said failure, but he never responded.
EC officials said that its perhaps the first time in UP that a sitting MP has been disqualified. There are hundreds of contestants who have been disqualified after polls, but it is for the first time that a sitting MP has been disqualified in UP, said an official, adding that no sitting MLA has been disqualified in UP so far.
When contacted,Singh said,It may be the fault of my election agent who did not submit the details of expenses. I will appeal to the ECI against the decision.
In 2009 Lok Sabha election,Singh had defeated BSPs Afzal Ansari by 69,309 votes.
