The state government may next week decide on its plan to run either metro rail or monorail in the state capital. The UP chief secretary has convened a meeting on November 12 in which the Lucknow Development
Authority (LDA) officials will make a presentation on their recent study on monorail and the progress in Metro rail project.
In its presentation next week, the LDA will discuss the utility of monorail and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the metro rail project. Cost and utility of both the transport systems will be compared in the meeting.
No decision has been taken so far on scrapping of the metro rail project. In the upcoming meeting, presentation will be made on metro as well monorail. Discussions will be held to decide on running one of them or both in Lucknow, said Ravindra Singh, principal secretary,Housing and Urban Planning department.
In its report, the LDA has given data and facts indicating that monorail project could be more feasible as compared to metro rail for Lucknow in terms of cost and ridership.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is preparing the Detailed Project Report for the metro rail project in Lucknow for last 21 months.
The DMRC has so far proposed two corridors in Lucknow covering around 37 km.
As per the DMRCs preliminary reports, each km under metro rail project in Lucknow will cost around Rs 200 crore while the cost for the same in case of monorail will be around Rs 130 crore. By opting the monorail, the state government can save around Rs 3000 crore, said a member of the LDA team that visited Mumbai lats month.
The capacity of monorail is almost half of the metro rail. But that will be sufficient for Lucknows population in next 40 years. It will be the best utilization of investment, he said.
According to the LDA report, monorail is derailment-proof as trains under the system run on beam and not on tracks.
It can be set up in the areas having comparatively narrow roads. Moreover,it is eco-friendly as it does not produce any noise, the official said.
According to the discussions, metro rail can be run on two main corridors East-West and North-South while monorail can be run to connect other areas, said a government official.
