Dreaded dacoit Raju Kol,who was carrying reward of Rs 50,000,was killed along with two other gang members reportedly in a shootout with rivals in Mau area of Chitrakoot district on Saturday.
Kol had 22 cases including those of murder,kidnapping and dacoity pending against him in UP and Madhya Pradesh and he was on the run since he escaped from the police custody from a moving train in Manikpur of Chitrakoot in 2008.
Chitrakoot Superintendent of Police (SP) Tahsildar Singh said the locals of Piyara village informed the police after they found bullet-ridden bodies of three dacoits lying in the ravines around 9 am.
The villagers told the police they had heard gunshots emanating from the thickets last night.
Singh said the gangs of Kol and his rival Shanker had probably exchanged fire.
While one of Kols associates was identified as Chhotwa of Manikpur area,another one is yet to be identified,he added.
A double-barrel gun and live cartridges were recovered from the spot.
