Taking serious note of complaints of irregularities in construction of the new terminal at Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport, which was inaugurated on May 19,the Ministry of Civil Aviation has ordered an inquiry.
Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ajit Singh has referred the matter to the Chief Technical Examiners Wing of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) for conducting a detailed inquiry.
The inquiry was ordered on the basis of a preliminary inquiry report submitted by a committee headed by Samir Sahai,Chief Vigilance Officer of Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited. The committee was constituted following various complaints received from MPs and reports in the media. The inquiry report prima facie substantiated various defects in the construction quality, design and maintenance of the terminal.
Recently,Lucknow MP Lalji Tandon had alleged irregularities in construction of the terminal building and had demanded an inquiry.
Lucknow Airport Director Suresh Chandra Hata said the inquiry committee headed by Sahai had inspected the new terminal building in August first week. Hata said that he has not received any communication about the new detailed inquiry.
The preliminary inquiry found that the quality of work was below standard. The major defects included leakages from the roof above the check-in counter,in the ceilings near the departure lounge corridor and from some thermal expansion joints. The rain water harvesting method was also prone to leakage as proper drainage system was not in place.
The committee also found that the flooring in the arrival and departure terminal was not proper with the granite stone cracking at some places. The electrical fittings were also not properly fixed at many places.
