The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,CSMMU is planning to start an MD course in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR). CSMMU will be the first medical university to start the course in the state.
A two-member team of the Medical Council of India visited the department on Monday to inspect the facilities before giving its approval for the course. The university is planning to introduce the course from this year, the new session will commence from the first week of May.
While the requirement is of one professor and one reader or lecturer in each unit of 30 beds, the department already has one professor and two lecturers. The department has a 100-bed facility and two new lecturers will be appointed soon. Though we have enough facilities for three units,we are planning to undertake only two units initially for the course, Sharma said. A minimum of two and a maximum of 4 students can seek admission for the MD course and six students will be admitted in the diploma course.
In the second phase, the department plans to take a Bachelors course in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics and orthotics. Twenty students will be allowed to take each of these four-year courses. While occupational therapy is a subject pertaining to daily life and the associated physical activities, orthotics and prosthetics are associated with the use of calipers or artificial limbs.
This is the first time in India that all these courses will be available under the same roof, he said.
The Centre will bear 75 per cent of the cost of the courses and the university the rest.
Only three to four lectures and a 15-day exposure is devoted to this issue in the MBBS course. The scope is wide as few medical students have a specialty.
