Cops gear up to trace missing children

Brisk activities were witnessed in the Child Complaint Cell set up in Kanpur Kotwali police station on Friday. This was after BJP parliamentarian Kalraj Mishra raised the issue of the high number of missing children during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha.

The result: Following instructions from Kanpur DIG Neera Rawat,details of the children who went missing in 2009 were prepared in haste and forwarded to ASP (Crime) O P Singh.

The DIG has also instructed circle officers to directly monitor each case. “I have asked the COs to form teams to investigate each case. Some minors are still missing,we will trace them out soon,” said Rawat.

Senior police officers,however,were quick to mention that Mishra has quoted a wrong figure in the Rajya Sabha. Based on a report prepared by a NGO,Mishra had said that 60 children were reported went missing in Kanpur between February and June.

“I do not know from where Mishra got the details,but our official record indicates that 38 children went missing between February and June,” Rawat said. She added that between January 1 and July 24,63 cases of missing children have been reported in Kanpur. While 24 minors have been traced,39 are still missing.

ASP (Crime) O P Singh said,“A detailed list of missing children was handed over to me today. We have initiated steps to trace them at the earliest.”
