Three unidentified men shot dead a police constable in Firozabad’s Sirsaganj locality on Thursday night.

The police said the assailants shot constable Rama Kant to rescue their associates whom he had caught with the help of another constable.

Rama Kant suffered a bullet injury on his chest. He was rushed to the district hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

A case has been registered against unidentified persons with no arrests made so far.

Firozabad Additional Superintendent of Police R K Pandey said efforts are on to trace the identity of the assailants.

A native of Etawah,Rama Kant was posted at the Sirsaganj police station. He is survived by his wife and one-and-a-half-year-old child.

According to the police,around 10 pm Thursday,Rama Kant,along with police constable Anil Kumar,was patrolling the area on a motorcycle when they noticed three youths and found their movements suspicious.

The constables approached them and held two while the third managed to escape,but returned after a while to rescue his associates.

The police said one of the men fired at Rama Kant with a country-made pistol after which all three ran away,adding that they also tried to snatch the constables’ rifles. police have seized the assailants’ motorcycle.
