The Congress on Tuesday launched save MGNREGA campaign in Uttar Pradesh. The campaign was launched by Congress state president Nirmal Khatri, who said party workers would collect demand for work applications from all across the state and if the SP government failed to provide employment within next 15 days, the Congress workers would start agitation demanding, unemployment allowance for such workers.
It would be a 100-day campaign and we have kept a target to collect 5 lakh applications for work. The campaign aims at targeting the state government, which plans to hit the scheme here. Last year, only 65,000 households got 100 days work, whereas the figures used to be an average of 5 lakh workers in the past. Thus,we would reach every village to collect these applications for work, said AICC member Sanjay Dixit, who has been raising the issue of MGNREGA in the state.
On Tuesday, the campaign was started by collection of applications from about 100 workers from Rae Bareli,Lakhimpur and Hardoi districts. Meanwhile,in the meeting chaired by Khatri,it has been decided that the party would also open a control room to cater to the needs of these workers. It would assist the workers in getting receipts for their applications and in getting unemployment allowance in case they are not given work within 15 days.
Meanwhile,it has also been decided that the party would also propagate Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, under which about 3,600 gram panchayats of Uttar Pradesh have been selected. We realised that the state government has overlapped Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan scheme for villages with its Lohia Gram scheme. Thus, while most of the work in these villages are being undertaken by the central government,Nirmal Bharat, the state government is taking the name of Lohia Gram, said Dixit.
He said the party would place posters, banners in these Nirmal gram-panchayats in order to educate the villages about the scheme and the initiatives of the Centre.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme has become a political battlefield between state and the central governments. While the Centre continues to blame the state for poor performance under the scheme, the state government maintains that it is due to shortage of funds from the Centre that the state has failed to perform.
